Essential Information For Choosing the Perfect Softball Bat

Essential Information For Choosing the Perfect Softball Bat
By guest author: Allison H.

Whether you prefer to stay in the field, or you live for your turn at bat, all softball players must have a bat. There are tons of bats to choose from, but hopefully this guide can help you understand the different materials bats are made of and the different game standards when it comes to choosing a bat. Enjoy!

Aluminum alloy - Like most products, with higher quality the material you can expect better performance. Also, more affordable aluminum alloy bats are comprised of higher quality matter and last much longer than they have in the past. Technology has made great strides over time as well so you can pick from a variety of different kinds that might support your style, however, technology is helpful, but make sure you pick a bat that feels good in your hands /when you swing it!

Composite - Some bats are 100% composite, while some have composite handles and alloy barrels. Check the description of the bat to find out exactly what it's made up of, as there is no standard formula for composite materials. Again, give it a swing and really grip it to evaluate the feel of the bat.

Wood - Typically, wood bats are made of ash, maple, bamboo, or even maple composite wood. Some players swear by wooden bats, while others despise them. It's all a matter of personal preference.

Slow Pitch - Slow Pitch bats generally are about 34 inches long with varying drop*, but check with your coach to confirm any specific regulations your league may have.

Fast Pitch - Fast Pitch bats cannot be more than 34 inches long, and 2-1/4 inches in diameter. Plus, the allowable drop* is no more than 12.
* The drop is calculated by taking the length of the bat (in inches) and subtracting the weight in ounces.

Youth Bats - Commonly used in Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripkin, Dixie, and Pony.

T-Ball Bats - Ideal for ages 4 - 6.

Barrel size - The Slowpitch and Fastpitch softball bat barrel standard is 2-1/4 inches. Smaller barrels however are lighter and provide an increased swing speed that many players find attractive,

Bat taper - Is the diameter of the bat's handle. Standard bats are tapered 31/32 of an inch. Other bats provide a smaller taper for those who want a light bat, and a larger taper for those who prefer a heavier bat.

Grip - Aluminum bats offer different grip options that vary by manufacturer. Synthetic or Natural leather provide a more secure grip as they are a bit more tacky. Some bats offer cushioned grips that reduce shock significantly.

As I always say, research is key. Be sure to identify what you need, investigate all softball equipment available, and then pick what is best for you! Training is also an essential part of a great game, so be sure to look for more information on softball training to improve your skills even further.

Softball Training Equipment - Tips to Improve Game Performance

Softball Training Equipment - Tips to Improve Game Performance
By guest authors: Olivia Stanford and Jack Griffith

If you're a serious softball enthusiast, or even if you're just helping your son or daughter develop some strength and accuracy for little league, then you're probably on the lookout for softball training equipment.

There are actually many items available to help you improve your performance as a softball player. This article will discuss some of the softball training equipment that's out there in order to help you decide what may be of benefit to you or your kids.

Softball Training Equipment Starts With the Basics - Balls and Bats

Every softball game needs a ball. And since every softball player will handle the ball at some point, there are weighted softballs that can help to increase strength as well as improve accuracy.

Imagine training with a ball that is 9, 10, 12 ounces or more. The heavier ball allows players to develop a strong arm and increase pitch speed. As the player gets accustomed to the heavier ball, he also learns to throw with greater accuracy. A set of 4 weighted training softballs will have an approximate price of $25.

Whether you're an outfielder or a pitcher, weighted training softballs can help you throw better, faster, and get the ball to your intended target - not overthrown or underthrown. When you get into the game and throw the regulation 6.5 ounce softball, it will feel like you're throwing a ball made of styrofoam!

The next piece of softball training equipment that you'll want to consider is the training bat.

Some training bats come with adjustable weights that hang on the end of the bat. They look like a bat that has a ring stuck on the end.

These weights allow the player to increase swing strength and encourages "muscle memory," which is where the muscles involved in the swing become used to the initial short swing to hit the ball, and then the long follow-through after the hit.

This type of training bat can also be used to warm up, helping the muscles to loosen up before the player's at-bat. Training bats typically run from $35 to about $70.

Batting Tees and Pitching Machines

Of course, most of us are familiar with the batting tee and pitching machines.

Batting tees basically hold the ball off the ground so that the player can practice hits and home runs. They typically run $25 to $200 or more, depending upon their level of sophistication.

Pitching machines are the next piece of softball training equipment we'll discuss. These have come a long way since the expensive machines of a few years ago. Today, you can get a nice pitching machine that will throw 30 mph balls at regular intervals for as little as $40!

Reaction Balls and Soft Mitts

A newer piece of softball training equipment is the reaction ball. This is a ball with "bumps" on it. It can be used for fielding practice or just tossed between two players. When the reaction ball hits the ground, it will bounce in unpredictable manners, allowing players to improve reaction time and hand-and-eye coordination.

Soft mitts are flat, foam mitts that train the player to improve the relationship between his two hands. The mitt encourages "quick hands," or the transition from catching the ball to throwing. It fits on the hand with three small elastic loops, and works well for honing fielding skills.

These run $15 to $20 and can fit on either hand.

Softball Training Equipment for Strength and Conditioning

There are additional softball training aids that can increase strength and condition of specific areas of your body.

For example, there is the wrist roller, which uses different weighted plates to develop strength in forearms. Reviewers have indicated that you can really feel the burn in your forearms!

Another aid is the power chute, which is a small parachute attached to your waist to increase wind resistance as he jogs. This allows the player to build up stronger thigh muscles as he runs trailing the power chute behind. This piece of softball training equipment can also increase stamina and acceleration.

Many baseball players are using titanium necklaces and bracelets, stating that titanium increases blood circulation and helps to relieve stiff muscles. Titanium is also available in a "power sleeve," which is said to concentrate the titanium in your arms to increase power and reduce any muscle fatigue.

One final piece of softball training equipment that has received good reviews is a drill mat. The mat absorbs the impact of jumping jacks and other up-and-down type motions to reduce impact on joints. While this has been encouraged as a softball training aid, it can also be used by athletes of all disciplines.

Softball training equipment can significantly improve game performance for the little league player as well as the serious athlete.

7 Free Ways To Increase Your Softball Coaching Knowledge

7 Free Ways To Increase Your Coaching Knowledge
By Stacie Mahoe

Great coaches know there is always more to learn about the game. Most are actively seeking new knowledge on a regular basis. If you want to step up your coaching game a bit, there are certainly a multitude of options. But if you're just starting out or simply on a tight budget and don't want to spend a lot of money on books, DVDs, coaches clinics, seminars, or other paid resources just yet, I have good news for you. There are a number of free resources with quality information available for you to learn from. Not only will you gain useful information from these resources, but they'll also help guide you when you are ready to invest some money in a paid coaching resource. Here are 7 free ways to increase your coaching knowledge.

Borrow Books from the Library

Typically, there are a number of great coaching books out there. But if you're like me, you probably can't afford to buy every one you want. This is where your local library can help. You will probably be able to find at least a handful of good coaching books there. As long as you return the books on time, you can read each and every book they have to offer for free. Of course, if you come across one that you particularly like, you can always make the choice to purchase it for future reference. But only after you've gotten a free use of a number of books and are able to choose the one(s) you like best.

Visit Free Informational Websites

If you do an internet search for your sport or coaching tips for you sport, you will probably be able to find some website out there with free tips. For example if you are a softball coach you can search for "softball," fastpitch softball," "softball coaching tips," or "free softball tips." I'm sure you can think of more, but those are just a few ideas of what you could enter into a search engine to find free information about your sport. The cool thing about learning from websites is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Plus, it's easy to share with a friend or colleague.

Read Free Articles and Free Newsletters

Most free information websites have these next two items: free articles and free newsletters. Often times there will be a page with links to free articles you can read. Most of these sites also have free newsletters where you can have tips sent to you via e-mail on a regular basis. Usually all you need to provide is a first name and e-mail address and you're set to get free tips delivered right to your inbox.

Download Free e-books/Short Reports

Some websites out there also offer free short reports or e-books. These resources are usually provided by instant download in a pdf file. Even websites that offer paid products usually have some sort of free short report or e-book that you can take a look at. I like e-books and reports because you can print them out and take them with you to read when it's convenient for you. You can also highlight, circle, or otherwise mark the important parts of the report. Another cool thing about free reports or e-books is that, often times, you arealso allowed to pass the report on to others. The publisher of the report will tell you in the first couple of pages whether or not it's okay to reproduce or redistribute the report. If it's okay, you can make copies for your coaching staff or your players if it's something you'd like to pass along to them.

Participate in Free Forums

Another great place to learn is at online forums. There are paid ones out there, but there are often many free ones as well. Some are better than others, but usually there are one or two with a lot of activity and input from experts in the sport as well. A forum or message board is a great place to ask your coaching questions and have them answered by a variety of people. They are also great for browsing just see what hot tips or products other members are talking about or see what questions other coaches, parents, or players have about the game. Typically you'll have to register at a forum before you can ask or answer questions there. For the free ones, all they usually require is that you provide a username and password and maybe your e-mail address.

Network with Other Coaches

Networking can be done over the computer or in person. Basically, just talk with other coaches. When you attend tournaments, clinics, or coaches meetings, take the time to talk with other coaches who are there. Everyone know something you don't, so you never know what you can learn by simply introducing yourself and talking with others in your sport. Networking can also be done via e-mail or in forums as mentioned above. This may not be something you're completely comfortable with at first if you're not the outgoing type, but just think of the opportunities you may miss out on simply because you're more "comfortable" staying to yourself. Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone just a bit and make contacts wherever possible. You just never know what someone else may be able to offer you one day down the road if not sooner.

As you can see there are a number of ways to increase your coaching knowledge or knowledge of the game for free. Successful coaches are life long learners. There's no reason you can't learn something new today with all the ideas listed in this article. When you're ready to take the next step and make an investment in yourself as a coach, these free resources will be a great starting point to find the paid coaching resources that are the best fit and value for you.

Coaching Tips For Girls Fast Pitch Softball

By Marc Dagenais

Coaching softball can take its toll on coaches if they don't handle situations the right way. Disruptive players, team slumps, getting your players to buy into your system and other issues can cause serious problems to coaches if they don't handle them the right way. Therefore,it's important that coaches make the right decisions regarding these issues and anything else that might present itself as a challenge to the team. Here are some softball coaching tips for coaches to use when facing tough obstacles.

Tip 1 - Spread the captain's role around. You don't need to have team captains, but if you want to take that road to build self-esteem and enthusuasm, be sure that all the players get an opportunity - especially if you're teaching young children. (When you're teaching more advanced level, you can feel good with the team captains being in that role all season long.) Giving children the chance to lead practice warm-ups or the chance to demonstrate a certain drill puts everyone on the same footing, and it decreases the chance that certain kids will feel less important than some of their teammates.

Tip 2 - Coach Within Yourself. You can't be someone you're not, or conduct yourself as a coach they way you see someone else do it. Get comfortable with yourself and do it your way.

Tip 3 - Downplay wins and losses. When coaching softball, escpecially at the younger levels, coaches have to learn to ignore the scoreboard and focus on teaching and making the game fun. If all you think about is the score then your players will eventually notice. If you make it known that the score is not important to you whether you're winning or losing by a lot of runs then your players will follow your lead.

Tip 4 - Create Pride In Your Program. Do it the hard way: through hard work and success; through items of clothing - sweatshirts, jackets, t-shirts and uniforms - with neat team logos; through publicity, through your own effort.

Tip 5 - You want to be a little nervous. Adults get nervous before they have to make big presentations to clients, trying to close business deals, or asking the boss for a raise. That's because we really care a lot about what happens (especially when it comes to getting a pay raise!) Players experience the same jitters before softball games because they have a desire to do well. Let your players know that being nervous before the opening pitch is okay and normal. Being nervous is a good sign that shows they care about the game. Pros and kids alike get nervous before games! To fight pre-game edginess, tell your players to take a few deep breaths, which helps calm the body and relax the muscles.
