Different Ways to Utilize Softball Pitching Machines

As a softball coach or a player, it's important to practice with the best all-around equipment, and an example of this would be softball pitching machines. This piece of equipment is very versatile in that it can be used to help improve your skills in many different aspects of the game. Here are a few ways that softball pitching machines can be used to improve your overall performance:

Outfielding

One way to use softball pitching machines is to adjust the machine to throw pop-ups to your outfielders. You can practice catching pop-ups, as well as chasing down pop flies that are "hit" away from you. You also could lower softball pitching machines to simulate line drives to the outfield that need to be fielded and thrown back to the infield. It's as important to field the ball in the outfield as it is to catch pop flies.

Infielding

To work on taking ground balls in the infield, you can set softball pitching machines to fire line drive grounders. You can also adjust the speed of the machines to simulate weakly hit grounders that infielders will need to run in on.

Hitting

The most obvious use is for throwing pitches so you can work on improving your hitting. You can adjust the machine to practice hitting pitches with lots of arch to them, or to pitch softballs that are a little bit flatter. If you are a fastpitch player, you can increase the speed of the machine to help you improve your contact as a hitter.

Team Drills

You can utilize softball pitching machines to work on team fundamentals. One way is to set up situational drills, such as having a runner tagging up from third trying to score. Use the machine to throw pop-ups to the outfielders. Have the outfielders catch it and relay it in back to a middle infielder, who will in turn fire it back to the catcher to tag out the tagging runner.

You could also simulate a game by having the players who aren't starters in the field act as base runners. You can then adjust the pitching machine to "hit" the ball to different parts of the field as the base runners advance. You can make a game out of it by making the fielders have to run laps or do pushups if the base runners score so many runs. This will encourage the fielders to pay more attention to what they are doing on the field, which will hopefully translate onto the field during a real game.

If you don't have an easy to read line-up posted in the dugout you are hurting yourself, your players, and subsequently your team by allowing yourself and the team to be distracted from the game. Let's face it, it's information that you want to have ready access to, and you want your players to have ready access to as well. So why are you keeping this vital information on a scratch piece of paper or on a carbon copy that is barely legible?

The best magnetic lineup board is about 8.5" x 14" and consists of a position diagram of the softball field on the top, positions for a batting order on the bottom, and a hook so it can be easily hung in the dugout for everyone to see. You simply place magnets with the player's names in the position on the diagram that they will be playing. If you will be subbing in to a position you can go ahead and put the sub's magnetic above or below the starter's magnet. The same is true with the batting order. If you know you will be subbing in for a hitter just put the sub's magnet next to the starter's magnet.

The real beauty to a magnetic lineup board is before the game has started when you are putting together your game strategy. After making your initial batting order it's very easy to adjust for who's hot and who's not, or if you need a bunter in the second or third position, and if you change the batting order will that change who you want to play on defense and where you can make those changes. You can also see the effect your substitutions will have on positions and the batting order. What you used to have to envision in your mind you can now see on the board, both offensively and defensively and for the entirety of the game not just the start of the game. It let's you create your game strategy prior to the game. It's called HAVING A PLAN.

Hey Coach, Listen Up

The decisions you make in determining your lineup WILL AFFECT the outcome of the game. Once the game has started there's not much opportunity to correct a poor batting order. Sometimes it's easy to put together a line up. Other times, we've spent 10 or 15 minutes maneuvering players around on our magnetic lineup board to assess the strengths and weaknesses and determining what we needed for the upcoming game. I can't imagine going through this exercise with paper and pen.

Whether your fastpitch softball team, or baseball team, is a beginning team or a highly skilled tournament team, putting your players in the right positions, building the best batting order, and having a plan for your substitutions, will decide the outcome of many fastpitch softball games. A magnetic lineup board costs about $20.00. Twenty dollars is a cheap investment to KNOW that you have given your team their best opportunity to win. Hey, it's worth the twenty bucks just not to have to answer the question "who do I bat after" 500 times during the season.

There are two magnetic lineup boards on the market. The Easton brand and the Coacher brand. They both cost about $20.00, HOWEVER, the Coacher board is the clear winner. The Easton board does not have a field diagram which prevents you from visualizing the starting defense and, just as important, the defense after substitutions have been made. The Coacher board does have the field diagram.

In conclusion, I would grade the Easton board a C because it is better than using a piece of paper. The Coacher board gets an A+ as it is the complete package and the superior product. For the same investment, you have the choice of the Mercedes or the Pinto.

Softball Training Equipment - Tips to Improve Game Performance

If you're a serious softball enthusiast, or even if you're just helping your son or daughter develop some strength and accuracy for little league, then you're probably on the lookout for softball training equipment.

There are actually many items available to help you improve your performance as a softball player. This article will discuss some of the softball training equipment that's out there in order to help you decide what may be of benefit to you or your kids.

Softball Training Equipment Starts With the Basics - Balls and Bats

Every softball game needs a ball. And since every softball player will handle the ball at some point, there are weighted softballs that can help to increase strength as well as improve accuracy.

Imagine training with a ball that is 9, 10, 12 ounces or more. The heavier ball allows players to develop a strong arm and increase pitch speed. As the player gets accustomed to the heavier ball, he also learns to throw with greater accuracy. A set of 4 weighted training softballs will have an approximate price of $25.

Whether you're an outfielder or a pitcher, weighted training softballs can help you throw better, faster, and get the ball to your intended target - not overthrown or underthrown. When you get into the game and throw the regulation 6.5 ounce softball, it will feel like you're throwing a ball made of styrofoam!

The next piece of softball training equipment that you'll want to consider is the training bat.

Some training bats come with adjustable weights that hang on the end of the bat. They look like a bat that has a ring stuck on the end.

These weights allow the player to increase swing strength and encourages "muscle memory," which is where the muscles involved in the swing become used to the initial short swing to hit the ball, and then the long follow-through after the hit.

This type of training bat can also be used to warm up, helping the muscles to loosen up before the player's at-bat. Training bats typically run from $35 to about $70.

Batting Tees and Pitching Machines

Of course, most of us are familiar with the batting tee and pitching machines.

Batting tees basically hold the ball off the ground so that the player can practice hits and home runs. They typically run $25 to $200 or more, depending upon their level of sophistication.

Pitching machines are the next piece of softball training equipment we'll discuss. These have come a long way since the expensive machines of a few years ago. Today, you can get a nice pitching machine that will throw 30 mph balls at regular intervals for as little as $40!

Reaction Balls and Soft Mitts

A newer piece of softball training equipment is the reaction ball. This is a ball with "bumps" on it. It can be used for fielding practice or just tossed between two players. When the reaction ball hits the ground, it will bounce in unpredictable manners, allowing players to improve reaction time and hand-and-eye coordination.

Soft mitts are flat, foam mitts that train the player to improve the relationship between his two hands. The mitt encourages "quick hands," or the transition from catching the ball to throwing. It fits on the hand with three small elastic loops, and works well for honing fielding skills.

These run $15 to $20 and can fit on either hand.

Softball Training Equipment for Strength and Conditioning

There are additional softball training aids that can increase strength and condition of specific areas of your body.

For example, there is the wrist roller, which uses different weighted plates to develop strength in forearms. Reviewers have indicated that you can really feel the burn in your forearms!

Another aid is the power chute, which is a small parachute attached to your waist to increase wind resistance as he jogs. This allows the player to build up stronger thigh muscles as he runs trailing the power chute behind. This piece of softball training equipment can also increase stamina and acceleration.

Many baseball players are using titanium necklaces and bracelets, stating that titanium increases blood circulation and helps to relieve stiff muscles. Titanium is also available in a "power sleeve," which is said to concentrate the titanium in your arms to increase power and reduce any muscle fatigue.

One final piece of softball training equipment that has received good reviews is a drill mat. The mat absorbs the impact of jumping jacks and other up-and-down type motions to reduce impact on joints. While this has been encouraged as a softball training aid, it can also be used by athletes of all disciplines.

Softball training equipment can significantly improve game performance for the little league player as well as the serious athlete.

Softball Pitcher's Face Mask Should Be Mandatory

The time has come for the Sanctioning bodies of adult softball and youth fastpitch softball to require all softball pitchers and 3rd basemen to wear a protective softball face mask. While the actual risk of being hit in the face with a line drive is slight, the severity of the injury can be blindness or even death. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1991 reported that more than 100,000 cases of facial trauma occurred in children younger than 14 years while they participated in sports activities with a surprisingly high incidence of female pitchers that are hit with a batted ball.

A couple of real life examples that I have witnessed first hand. A few years back when my daughters softball team was just a 10 year old team, we had the opportunity to play a High School Junior Varsity team. During that game, one of our 10 year old girls hit a line shot back at the pitcher. The pitcher was just able to move her head enough that the ball glanced off the side of her head just above her ear. She immediately fell to the ground and everyone rushed the field to see about her. Fortunately the ball had glanced off of her rather than a straight on blunt impact. She only suffered from a rather severe abrasion on her head, a swollen ear, and a pretty good size knot on her head. Understand that I'm talking about a fairly athletic 14 year old girl only had the chance to react and turn her head about 45 degrees to avoid a ball hit by a 10 year old girl.

Just this season I was watching a fastpitch softball game of 12 year old girls. I was sitting by the father of the 3rd baseman and we were discussing how scary it is that coach's have the 3rd baseman play so close to home plate. Many 3rd baseman now play about 20 feet inside 3rd base and even closer when the coach thinks the other team is going to bunt. Later that same inning, a batter ripped a line drive about 18 inches directly over his daughter's head. She didn't even have time to flinch. Honestly, it was so sudden she didn't have time to duck or move her hands for protection. The dad, relieved that his daughter was okay, said, "That's it. I'm online tonight and will buy a protective face mask. She won't play 3rd base again without one."

One might think a protective face mask is only applicable to girls softball, but that would be naive. Just two years ago, I met a man that played recreational slow pitch softball. He proceeded to tell me that he still plays softball but he can no longer pitch. He had been struck in his right eye socket with a batted ball and could not risk being struck again. Are you ready for this, it took three surgeries and 189 stitches to repair the damage to his eye socket, nose, and cheek. I don't know his exact age, but I suspect he was in his late 20's or early 30's when the injury occurred.

The game of softball is the most participated sport in the U.S. Given this level of participation and the possible severity of facial injuries, it just makes sense that players in high risk positions should be required to wear a softball protective face mask. The unfortunate reality is that most people will not wear safety gear until they are required to do so. A couple of years ago, face masks on batting helmets became mandatory. In the year prior to that rule, my daughter's softball team was the only team in our fastpitch softball league that voluntarily put face masks on batting helmets. That's just one team out of approximately 50 teams.

I'm not sure why more players don't wear the protective face mask. I suspect some parents are not aware that it exists and many other parents don't want to spend the $40.00 because the odds are so slim. Imagine what the cost might be for a trip to the emergency room, a week in the hospital, and two or three re-constructive surgeries. That's just the actual financial cost. Also consider the potential of losing sight in one eye, or the mental damage associated with having scars from 189 stitches. Those costs can't be measured.

Now that you have been made aware of the safety issue, the severity of the injury, the knowledge that there are softball protective face masks on the market, what will your position be? Will you be proactive with your local league? If you coach, will you be proactive with your team? Finally, will you be proactive with your daughter, or with yourself if you play softball?

Making the Most Out of Your Softball Training

Training is a significant part of any athlete. If you want to become a better softball player, then you have to train your body well with different drills and exercises. All of these activities work together to help you meet the demands that playing the game on the field requires.

But just like a lot of things, there's a good form of training, and then there's the bad one. Good training is one that helps improve your performance and achieve your fitness goals without wasting any of your time and energy. On the other hand, bad training is ineffective and worse, can lead you to injuries.

That's why I came up with these softball tips to help you make the most out of your training.

Have a Consistent Schedule and Stick with It

It doesn't matter if you're going through a well-designed program if you're not going to stick with it for the long haul.

The key to having an effective training is by having a schedule and faithfully following that schedule. Planning what you have to do for every day of the week would be a good start.

Another important thing here is that you should make time for your training. Some athletes prefer to train during the morning, while others would rather do it after school or work. But what's important is that you try to fit in your training into your schedule.

Make Your Training Varied

If you've been training for a long time, you're probably familiar with the term plateau when it comes to training. This is the point where you already achieved your highest fitness level for a certain form of training and you can no longer go any further.

The trouble with plateau is that you eventually get burned out if you keep on doing it and no longer see any more results from the activity you're doing.

To prevent that from happening, you should change your training programs regularly. I recommend that you change it every 3-6 weeks. This will keep you and your body physically challenged. Thus, prevent the incidence of burn out when you're training.

Find a Training That's Softball Specific

There are a lot of workouts out there that are great when it comes to helping you lose your unwanted fat. However, they won't help you a lot in becoming a better softball player.

The reason for this is that softball has specific requirements that are different from other sports and activities. That's why you need a softball-specific type of training that will help you maximize your performance on the field.

Some of these softball specific types of training may include training your lateral motion, your shoulder strength and your batting mechanics.

So, if you really want a form of training that gives you specific results for your sport, then, look for softball-specific types of training.

I hope that the softball tips that I shared with you above will help you find types of training that will provide you with the biggest impact when it comes to your performance on the field.

Baseball and softball are not games of strength, but of EXPLOSIVE POWER. Just how strong do you have to be to pick up a 5 oz baseball, or a 30 oz bat? On the other hand, propelling that 5 oz ball 90+ mph, or hitting a ball 400+ feet with that 30 oz bat requires tremendous power - the ability to perform work. In this case, the work of playing baseball and softball at a high level.

In both games, while they can be slow in duration, the various activities that comprise a game are short and quick. Rarely does a play take longer than 6 or 7 seconds. There are exceptions, of course - an inside the park homer, or an extended rundown or "pickle." But, for the most part, things happen very quickly on the diamond.

Why does this matter to you?

Well, let me ask you this: how often have you heard coaches tell pitchers to condition themselves by running laps - Long, Slow Distance (LSD) training, or to spend a lot of time pedaling a bike?

If you've been around as long as I have, you've seen this a lot. Here's the problems: these coaches (and many players) incorrectly think that LSD (or aerobic) conditioning improves player performance. In fact, studies show the aerobic demands (the amount of oxygen needed by the body) of baseball and softball to be very low.

In fact, the oxygen uptake of a baseball pitcher (the most active position) is a low 45% of the maximum needed. Apparently the rest pitchers get between each pitch and in-between innings is sufficient to replenish the main energy system used.

Baseball and softball are considered to be "alactic anaerobic" sports in terms of the energy system utilized, with pitchers in both sports the busiest players on the field. What this means is that there is little to no lactic acid buildup as a result of this activity. That burning feeling you get when you lift weights really hard is a result of a buildup of lactic acid, a by-product of that (and other) short-term, intense types of exercise.

Have you ever heard of a ball player complaining of this problem?

Consider the baseball pitcher: it takes about 0.15 seconds from the time the front foot contacts the ground until the ball is released. Very little lactic acid can be built up in this short burst of activity. The primary source of fatigue in pitching is not metabolic, but neural. [1]

Again, why does this matter to you?

Because studies show that LSD training significantly detracts from power, strength, and speed development.

Reduce these characteristics, and you educe your ability to throw with high velocity, hit with power, and run at high speed. Look at the bodies of sprinters vs. marathoners. You don't have to be built like a sprinter to be successful as a ball player, but this illustrates how training affects one's body, conditioning, and hence, ability to perform.

Put another way: Train Slow, Perform Slow.

As mentioned earlier, aside from the game itself (which can be be long and slow) things happen quickly on the ball field. Playing softball and baseball requires high velocity, ballistic movements like throwing a fast, well located pitch, taking a hard swing at this high velocity pitch, and exploding out of the batter's box to sprint down the first base line.

So how should you train?

To augment the aforementioned activities, concentrate on developing power, flexibility, and speed. Weight lifting, plyometrics, flexibility, and short burst sprint interval training should form the basis of conditioning for baseball and softball players.

Today, the surge of interest for softball is steadily increasing. Due to its wide popularity and well-publicized events, many are now into softball mania. In softball training, one should always do some routines to warm up themselves. This is a must in order to flex their muscles and stay away from any pains like muscle pain or back pains. While training, we use some tools or equipments in enhancing further our vigor, agility, stamina or speed. For a good softball player, just like any sports, one should have sound body and sound mind. No matter what position are you, one should really starts with batting. You do not know, you might then be doing it at some point of time. Batting aids are used to challenge and force you to correct the problems when it comes to swinging. By using the available training bats, one might begin with a pitching machine that varies the speed and the height of the pitches. With this training, you will learn how to estimate how fast the balls are being pitched and how high are they. You can also try weight rings that will test your endurance and strength.

Then move on to throwing aids. Just like batting, throwing or pitching is also important in softball training. You can use the catch-all nets. These are just simple mesh screens that allow you to pitch at full speed towards a target. You can make use of cans as an alternative if there are no catch-nets. Place the cans in different heights and be it your target. Getting a throwing sleeve will also help by keeping your arm warm and correcting your pitching form as you throw.

Same as other sports, the more you train your softball skills, the better you play. Softball training aids can help you improve your skills to a higher level by correcting your poor form, intensifying the softball drills and most important, allow you to practice by yourself!

Gripping the balls should also be a part of your softball training. Rotate the balls into some of your softball drills and exercises. The heavier balls force you to improve your strength. Plus, training balls are inexpensive ones.

Watch how the professionals play. Get some softball videos. They are great aids for training. By looking at their ways and techniques, one would always benefit from it. Find training videos that would teach how to do it the better way! Consider videoing yourself and compare it to the best players.

Fast pitch softball has been a popular American sport for decades, but it wasn't until the sport was added to the 1996 Olympics and got worldwide recognition, that it became the hugely popular phenomenon that it is today. Unlike many other team sports, the appeal of fast pitch softball is that a player can get satisfaction and recognition from their own success, as well as help propel their team to championships. Fast pitch softball is different from slow pitch in the way the ball is thrown to the batter. In general, the bat should be long enough to reach the players wrist when they stand it on end. To pick the correct weight, the player really needs to practice swinging the bat and testing how well they can control it without strain. What you're looking for is a bat that is the heaviest the player can manage without losing swing speed.

The material the fast pitch softball bat is made of also makes a big different. Bats are made of graphite, carbon, aluminum, or a composite. Composite bats offer the greatest variety of weight to length ratios, and can withstand more of an all-weather beating than their aluminum or carbon compatriots. Drills for Stronger Players

Good softball practice drills will both teach the players new techniques and allow them to see the results of their practicing over time. When used effectively, they will challenge players to become stronger in their positions and also reward them with successful game play. The following drills focus on strengthening infield, outfield, and base running technique.

In-Betweens

In this softball practice drill, outfielders learn the importance of communication while working on catching fly balls. First the team is divided into two groups. The groups form two lines in the outfield, spread out about 60 feet. The coach stands in front of the two lines and throws a softball in the air, like a fly ball from a hitter. The first two players in the lines watch and call for the ball until someone catches it (ideally the one who called for it). The players then run to the end of the line and the next two players complete the drill.

Two Line Challenge

This practice drill for softball focuses on catching in the infield and often includes diving practice as well. Players form two lines, one at the second base position and the other at the shortstop position. The coach stands at the center of the diamond and rolls the ball in the direction of one of the positions. The first player in line fields the ball, which might require diving. Once she fields the ball she quickly tosses it back to the coach and runs to the end of the line.

Base Cycles

This softball drill works on increasing speed and improving technique in base running. Players form a line at home plate, starting with the fastest and ending with the slowest. Keeping a safe distance between each player, they run from home run all the way through first base. Once each player has reached the grass, they line up again at first base and run to second, then to third, and lastly to home.

The next level of the drill incorporates base coaches. The players run from home through to second base, making sure to check in with the coach. Then they complete the drill by running from second to third and third to home. Next they run from home to third, and on the last level of the drill they run from home all the way back to home. Players should focus on proper base running technique and following the instructions of their base coaches.

If you're a serious softball enthusiast, or even if you're just helping your son or daughter develop some strength and accuracy for little league, then you're probably on the lookout for softball training equipment.

There are actually many items available to help you improve your performance as a softball player. This article will discuss some of the softball training equipment that's out there in order to help you decide what may be of benefit to you or your kids.

Softball Training Equipment Starts With the Basics - Balls and Bats

Every softball game needs a ball. And since every softball player will handle the ball at some point, there are weighted softballs that can help to increase strength as well as improve accuracy.

Imagine training with a ball that is 9, 10, 12 ounces or more. The heavier ball allows players to develop a strong arm and increase pitch speed. As the player gets accustomed to the heavier ball, he also learns to throw with greater accuracy. A set of 4 weighted training softballs will have an approximate price of $25.

Whether you're an outfielder or a pitcher, weighted training softballs can help you throw better, faster, and get the ball to your intended target - not overthrown or underthrown. When you get into the game and throw the regulation 6.5 ounce softball, it will feel like you're throwing a ball made of styrofoam!

The next piece of softball training equipment that you'll want to consider is the training bat.

Some training bats come with adjustable weights that hang on the end of the bat. They look like a bat that has a ring stuck on the end.

These weights allow the player to increase swing strength and encourages "muscle memory," which is where the muscles involved in the swing become used to the initial short swing to hit the ball, and then the long follow-through after the hit.

This type of training bat can also be used to warm up, helping the muscles to loosen up before the player's at-bat. Training bats typically run from $35 to about $70.

Batting Tees and Pitching Machines

Of course, most of us are familiar with the batting tee and pitching machines.

Batting tees basically hold the ball off the ground so that the player can practice hits and home runs. They typically run $25 to $200 or more, depending upon their level of sophistication.

Pitching machines are the next piece of softball training equipment we'll discuss. These have come a long way since the expensive machines of a few years ago. Today, you can get a nice pitching machine that will throw 30 mph balls at regular intervals for as little as $40!

Reaction Balls and Soft Mitts

A newer piece of softball training equipment is the reaction ball. This is a ball with "bumps" on it. It can be used for fielding practice or just tossed between two players. When the reaction ball hits the ground, it will bounce in unpredictable manners, allowing players to improve reaction time and hand-and-eye coordination.

Soft mitts are flat, foam mitts that train the player to improve the relationship between his two hands. The mitt encourages "quick hands," or the transition from catching the ball to throwing. It fits on the hand with three small elastic loops, and works well for honing fielding skills.

These run $15 to $20 and can fit on either hand.

Softball Training Equipment for Strength and Conditioning

There are additional softball training aids that can increase strength and condition of specific areas of your body.

For example, there is the wrist roller, which uses different weighted plates to develop strength in forearms. Reviewers have indicated that you can really feel the burn in your forearms!

Another aid is the power chute, which is a small parachute attached to your waist to increase wind resistance as he jogs. This allows the player to build up stronger thigh muscles as he runs trailing the power chute behind. This piece of softball training equipment can also increase stamina and acceleration.

Many baseball players are using titanium necklaces and bracelets, stating that titanium increases blood circulation and helps to relieve stiff muscles. Have you seen the little girl out there at second base fumbling around trying to make a play on the softball when her glove keeps falling off her hand? Maybe you remember something like that happening to you when you were just starting out in fastpitch softball or baseball. It was frustrating and kind of humiliating. Made you think you were a bad ball player.

In this article I am going to tell you about the many different sizes of softball gloves. I will explain how to know which one is the best softball glove for you and why you should use that size and style.

One thing we as parents need to remember is that for a kid that is brand new to the game of fastpitch softball, we should give them the proper tools to learn the game. I don't mean you have to go out and buy them that awesome new Pro model glove that costs $259. You just need to make sure they have a glove that fits their little hand. But you can always sell it if they decide to give up on softball.

So What Size Does She Need

Glove sizes for the youngest kids are gonna be in the 10 inch to 10.5 inch pattern size. It probably won't matter which position she plays either. Get a glove she likes. They even make them in Pink and Purple now. Make sure she can put her hand into the glove easily, and that it stays on. If it falls right off, try to find one that has smaller finger slots or one with a velcro strap on the wrist.

OK, I'm Ready for Comp Ball

So, now your little girl has grown up and has really taken a shine to this game of fastpitch softball. She was able to learn and almost master the mechanics of fielding and throwing the ball. Now she is ready to move into travel ball or competitive softball. She thinks she needs a position specific softball glove?

What Size for My Position?

Most fastpitch softball catchers mitts are either 33.5 inch to 34.5 inch. I see most in the 34 inch size. It kind of depends on your preference and how strong your hand or the size of your hand. Fastpitch catchers mitts are also generally made with smaller finger stalls to fit a young ladies hand better. Baseball catchers mitts run a little smaller - in the 32.5 inch to 33.5 inch range. Youth catchers mitts can be smaller - in the 31 inch range.

Pitchers

Pitchers in softball usually like a slightly larger glove pattern. Generally in the 12.5 inch to 13 inch range, with 13 inch being most seen. Pitchers like to be able to hide the ball while getting the grip for the pitch. It also gives them a little more protection from that hard shot up the middle. Many pitchers like a glove with a beehive web - a kind of solid web. Some prefer the more open web. Again, it is a preference and by the age of 13 or 14 they are starting to have an opinion on everything.

If you're a serious softball enthusiast, or even if you're just helping your son or daughter develop some strength and accuracy for little league, then you're probably on the lookout for softball training equipment.

There are actually many items available to help you improve your performance as a softball player. This article will discuss some of the softball training equipment that's out there in order to help you decide what may be of benefit to you or your kids.

Softball Training Equipment Starts With the Basics - Balls and Bats

Every softball game needs a ball. And since every softball player will handle the ball at some point, there are weighted softballs that can help to increase strength as well as improve accuracy.

Imagine training with a ball that is 9, 10, 12 ounces or more. The heavier ball allows players to develop a strong arm and increase pitch speed. As the player gets accustomed to the heavier ball, he also learns to throw with greater accuracy. A set of 4 weighted training softballs will have an approximate price of $25.

Whether you're an outfielder or a pitcher, weighted training softballs can help you throw better, faster, and get the ball to your intended target - not overthrown or underthrown. When you get into the game and throw the regulation 6.5 ounce softball, it will feel like you're throwing a ball made of styrofoam!

The next piece of softball training equipment that you'll want to consider is the training bat.

Some training bats come with adjustable weights that hang on the end of the bat. They look like a bat that has a ring stuck on the end.

These weights allow the player to increase swing strength and encourages "muscle memory," which is where the muscles involved in the swing become used to the initial short swing to hit the ball, and then the long follow-through after the hit.

This type of training bat can also be used to warm up, helping the muscles to loosen up before the player's at-bat. Training bats typically run from $35 to about $70.

Batting Tees and Pitching Machines

Of course, most of us are familiar with the batting tee and pitching machines.

Batting tees basically hold the ball off the ground so that the player can practice hits and home runs. They typically run $25 to $200 or more, depending upon their level of sophistication.

Pitching machines are the next piece of softball training equipment we'll discuss. These have come a long way since the expensive machines of a few years ago. Today, you can get a nice pitching machine that will throw 30 mph balls at regular intervals for as little as $40!

Reaction Balls and Soft Mitts

A newer piece of softball training equipment is the reaction ball. This is a ball with "bumps" on it. It can be used for fielding practice or just tossed between two players. When the reaction ball hits the ground, it will bounce in unpredictable manners, allowing players to improve reaction time and hand-and-eye coordination.

Soft mitts are flat, foam mitts that train the player to improve the relationship between his two hands. The mitt encourages "quick hands," or the transition from catching the ball to throwing. It fits on the hand with three small elastic loops, and works well for honing fielding skills.

These run $15 to $20 and can fit on either hand.

Softball Training Equipment for Strength and Conditioning

There are additional softball training aids that can increase strength and condition of specific areas of your body.

For example, there is the wrist roller, which uses different weighted plates to develop strength in forearms. Reviewers have indicated that you can really feel the burn in your forearms!

Another aid is the power chute, which is a small parachute attached to your waist to increase wind resistance as he jogs. This allows the player to build up stronger thigh muscles as he runs trailing the power chute behind. This piece of softball training equipment can also increase stamina and acceleration.

Many baseball players are using titanium necklaces and bracelets, stating that titanium increases blood circulation and helps to relieve stiff muscles. Being a strength professional and fitness trainer in the Atlanta, Georgia area now for over 10 years I have had plenty of experience in training athletes of all kinds. I remember when I played baseball and looking back I wished I knew then what I know now about strength training and athletic performance. Even though I didn't play softball on a regular basis the act of hitting comes from the same motion and the integration of the same muscles that are involved in swinging the bat. If I would have had the opportunity to add something to my strength training program it would have been the kettlebell swing lift. This is a great strength and conditioning drill for softball players to develop some serious hitting power.

Strength Training Softball

You see as a player you already get plenty of skills training in terms of your hitting and fielding when you are at practice. This is a common theme with baseball and softball players and is also something that can tend to hurt your softball playing performance to a degree. So you are probably wondering Brandon how can this hurt my game? Well, its not the practicing that will hurt your softball game, but I have seen many players neglect the implementation of a smart strength and conditioning program over the years by putting all of their emphasis on skills practice and none on strength training. The only way you are going to improve your hitting, throwing, and fielding abilities is by making yourself a better athlete and this starts with lifts such as the kettlebell swing.

The kettlebell swing is the base strength endurance lift that is performed with this ancient device and it involves all of your big core muscles in order to pull it off. You are basically implementing a swinging motion with the bell by moving it at an arc back and forth from between your legs up to at least chest level. This is done by you having to engage your hips and knees in a state of constant flexion and extension in order to create the necessary momentum to swing the bell. By doing this you are involving all the major muscles that work together in order to hit the ball for some serious power.

Kettlebell training is a movement based style of training which is why it is so effective for preparing you for all sports. You move during the game so you should train your body in the same way. If you haven't already started to implement the swing lift into your softball strength and conditioning program then you are falling behind. Remember that most any athlete can train hard, but only the best train smart!

While choosing a catcher's mitt, it is also important to know that the padding must not interfere with the catching ability. The price of a softball catcher's mitt is higher than other normal gloves. One can either purchase a softball catcher's mitt online or buy at a retail store where one gets the advantage of trying the mitt on.

However, there is a big difference between gloves and mitts; gloves have fingers and mitts don't. It is important to stress that the first base and catcher are only positions which use mitts.
Another big temptation when choosing a youth glove is not to buy too "large" glove. There are many people who think that "he/she will grow into it". Get the right size and avoid needless pain.

First base mitts which are especially made for softball have measurements between 12 and 13 inches. They are usually have a thin but stiff pad that runs around the circumference of the mitt with little or no padding in the palm or finger area. For youth players they are made from 11 to 11.5 inches.

Furthermore, catcher's mitts have a thick around the circumference of the mitt with thick padding in the finger area and less padding in the palm area. Above all, the modern catcher's glove being more flexible and evolving towards a first base mitt look alike as the quickness of the ball to hand transfer for a catcher is critical.

You can have your mitts with open and closed webs. Open web is the choice of middle infielders, first baseman and some outfielders. It helps them to get the ball out of the glove faster. Therefore, closed web is the choice of pitchers, third base and most outfielders. They like the additional support that a closed web provides.

The Perfect Mitt - Which Softball Mitts Are Great For Which Positions?

The first thing to consider when you go out looking for the perfect softball mitt is the position of the player who will be using it. This is essential because different positions have different tasks. And they require their accessories to do different things for them. If you are still struggling with your softball mitts, and is having trouble telling a catcher's mitt from an infielder's glove, the descriptions below will definitely help.

Strictly for catchers

The most distinctive feature of catchers' mitts is that they do not have fingers. They are also heavily padded, so they can better protect your hand from the impact of the speeding ball. These types of mitt are also relatively more sturdy and durable because they are built to withstand all the action, and also keep the hand from getting too much trauma from ball landings. The catcher's mitt has closed webbing, and features a smaller pocket so you can easily take the ball out.

First base only

First base mitts look just like catchers' mitts because they don't have fingers as well. The only difference is that they have less padding. They also have a wider but shallower pocket so it's easier to get the ball out of the mitt. The typical size is 13 to 14 inches, and the webbing is open so it's easier to trap the ball within the pocket.

Pitcher perfect

Pitchers' gloves have a closed webbing to allow the player to keep the softball hidden while he tunes up his grip before the next pitch.

Infield

The gloves that infielders use are typically smaller than average and with a shallower pocket so it's easier to take the ball out and throw it to the person approaching the base. Many infielders are more comfortable with open webbing, although some third basemen will go for closed web mitts for better support during hard hits.

Outfield

Outfielders' gloves are typically the longest and biggest types, sometimes spanning at least 12 inches. The size is required because the players need to be able to catch fly balls.

Akadema is company established in 1998 by two brothers Joseph and Lawrence Gilligan. Lawrence Gilligan, ex professional baseball player, noticed that there had been little or no innovation in baseball gloves for decades. Thus, he decided to do something about it. Akadema with its innovation in mitts brought "A Game" to the field and achieve a higher level of play.

Akadema has revolutionized the industry by making innovative gloves for infielders, outfielders, catchers and pitchers. Since the each position is unique, they decided to incorporate unique patented technologies into their gloves to enhance a player's performance on the field. Their most distinguished feature is that all of them are made of high-quality leather.

Their Reptilian glove, is patented near fingerless design creates a natural air pocket which acts as a shock observer for initial ball impact, and in that way it's making glove to hand transfer smoother and quicker. Moreover, when the ball initially hits the glove, it makes a depression that allows the ball to sit longer in the glove. This approach in design also acts as a shovel for easier ground ball scooping.

When "Stress Wedge" technology is patented between the index finger and thumb, Akadema's Praying Mantis came out with shock-absorbing protection for the hand against injury and sting when receiving the ball.

Then, they made the innovation in infielders' glove with the Funnel. They made an open glove by inverting the thumb and pinky finger.

Further, they raised the level of play in outfield with the Claw. The Claw offers three wider finger stalls that are much larger than a regular glove.

At last, they made certain products for maintaining their gloves. They offer mitt masher, glove conditioner and glove lace. Besides gloves, they offer wood and metal bats, footwear, batting gloves, apparel, eye wear, equipment and travel bags.

However, how does Akadema compare with some of the other brands such as Nokona and Worth? When we compare Akadema with Nokona the thing that stands out is the long standing of Nokona products. They have been around for three-quarters of a century and therefore are a company with a long time reputation. The special features of Nokona products are their gloves which use special leather. There is the choice between kangaroo, buffalo and cowhide and the gloves are all handmade by craftsmen. These handmade gloves give that extra special feel when worn. Apart from gloves a range of Nokona products also include gear bags, lotions, bats and mallets. Though the gloves are handmade they are still reasonably priced when compared to a brand like Akadema. Therefore a comparison of the Akadema baseball gear with Nokona and Worth is very difficult. All have their highlights with Nokona having the special feature that their gloves are handmade and are stitched with leather that the customer can choose from.

On the other hand, Worth Sport Equipment has their products being used by many collegiate teams. They offer a wide range of bats with some accessories. The prices of Worth compare well with Akadema.

There are many manufacturers of baseball and softball equipment. While going in for purchase of any equipment it is best to understand your needs for the purchase. Then, when shopping your softball equipment the price is very important especially if you shop at budget. However, if you are serious sports player you will probably ask for quality and therefore you will go for famous brands.

Every coach tries to sharpen players’ skills so that they enjoy drills and improve their performance everyday.

But many coaches overlook bringing variety into drills to avoid players getting bored with same softball hitting drill again and again.

It is human nature that what you practice repeatedly becomes your habit. Coaches are no exception. Most softball coaches stick to same softball hitting drills in their daily practice. It affects players adversely and fails to bring out best in each player.

Variety in softball hitting is essential to motivate players and provide stimulus to players. Motivated players only can give best performance and improve their skills to greater heights.

Players must spice up their practice by learning fresh and some unique softball hitting drills from their coaches. Here are some types of drills to improve skills.

Pepper Game drill: This drill helps in developing short and quick swing and bat control. The hitter has to stand 22 feet away from 3 fielders who stand 2 feet away form each other. The hitter then hits the ball sharply giving single or double hop from fielders using short and quick downward stroke.

Coloured ball soft toss drill: The coach tosses two balls of different colours and shouts after releasing the ball which one to hit. This drill helps player in developing concentration keeping weight back.

Hitting fungoes: This drill is very useful for improving weight shift, downward swing, hand action and follow through. The hitter has to concentrate on hitting top half of the ball using short, downward swing.

Apart from drills, player must learn better softball pitches. For the beginners these softball pitches could be fastball pitch, curveball pitch and changeup pitch.

Fastball pitch requires lot of practice and the speed can be picked up with proper timing of leg kick, snapping of arm and stepping forward off the mound.

For curveball pitch you need to practice various techniques of gripping the ball and releasing it from hand with bending of wrist. Curveball pitch also requires different follow through directions of pitching arm.

The changeup pitch is thrown in a way to appear like a fastball but arrives much slower to the plate. Its low speed and deceptive delivery are intended to confuse the batter's timing.

In order to throw a ball at the intended spot, you need to grip it properly. You can learn different grips with the help of softball videos.

Seam fastball grip: In this grip, fingers are placed along top seam of the ball. Pitchers also use two seam fastball grip, but four seem provides more downward movement.

Curveball grip: Pitchers put a bend in thumb on a seam and create more spin. Hand is kept underneath the ball to create four seam sideways rotations.

Other grips include, knuckle curve, four seam rise ball, spinner rise ball and drop ball grip.

For learning different softball pitching grips and pitches, softball videos are quite useful. These videos demonstrate different pitches, hitting and explain how to grip softball for being more effective.

Softball videos are also useful for recruiting with coaches. You can show your skills and some best highlights to coaches on video to sell your talent.

Sport specific conditioning or game speed practicing are not new concepts, but often overlooked is the unique fitness training needs of fastpitch position players. Softball athletes execute short explosive movements followed by time at rest, but each position has different amounts of rest time. Softball pitchers and catchers operate at a different frequency than either infielders or outfielders. This rest interval difference needs to be taken into consideration by their strength and conditioning program. Many athletes now have specifically tailored fitness programs. Taking this into consideration, here are three examples of a tailored fitness program.

The Power Hitters:
The power hitter's greatest asset is their ability to generate bat speed through the hitting zone. Power hitter's can hit for high average and/or home runs. Defensively, power players will typically play as the catcher, corner infielder, or right field. For this group, the fitness program emphasizes the lower and upper body and core strength development. Conditioning workouts put added emphasis on incorporating medicine ball plyometrics for trunk torque and power development and improving speed-endurance for under 40 yard conditioning.

The Speed Players:
The speed player is defined by her ability to accelerate quickly and maintain a high maximum running velocity. Offensively this group includes your slappers, single hitters and base stealers. Defensively, this group is usually your middle infielders and outfielders. Even though speed player's training emphasizes speed and agility, they can also be some of the strongest players on the team. Speed player's typical strengthening routine focuses on full body exercises like lunges and squats, with less of an emphasis on upper body strength. Agility is enhanced through cone drills, ladder drills, and short shuttles. Finally, the speed endurance targets acceleration and running distances of less than 40 yards through resistance sprints and form running.

The Pitchers:
Arguable, the pitcher is the most influential player that effects the game's outcome. Not only do they need to be pitch explosively, but they also must have the endurance to pitch multiple games per week with, potentially, long innings. Their lower body and core must be exceptionally strong and powerful while maintaining wide range of motion and flexibility. Like speed players, pitchers conditioning training focuses are full body workouts with a slightly greater emphasis on lower body strength. Pitchers also need to do extra grip strengthening work and as hip flexors and adductors to improve lower body mobility.

Final Training Considerations:
Off-season and in-season fitness training sessions have dramatically different emphasis. In the off-season, a strong emphasis is placed on muscle building and injury prevention. Conversely, in-season training is for injury prevention and maintenance.

While the majority of each groups training is essentially the same, the number of sets and repetitions differ depending of the areas of emphasis. All groups include full body strength training, injury prevention exercises, and strength endurance training. Over the course of a week, the athletes cover all the strength and conditioning development areas, but with varying amounts of time based on their emphasis.

If you want to improve your skills as a batter, then making use of a softball pitching machine is a great way to do so. These tools are simply a must have for softball drills and can literally function as an extra coach that pitches balls to you. However, these machines should always be treated with special care so the following are tips to helping you use them safely.

Before getting started, it is absolutely essential that you wear protective gear in order to prevent the risk of any injuries which could occur. Be sure to wear a certified helmet that comes with straps to help ensure that it is firmly in place and won't fall off. Softball is an exciting sport that has been seeing an increase in popularity in recent years. Both fastpitch leagues as well as recreational slow pitch organizations have seen an influx of new players. While softball is a largely uncomplicated game that does not require a lot of expensive equipment, one piece of equipment that all players must have is their very own softball glove. Without a glove a player is going to have a difficult time trying to catch those hard line drives or scoop up those tricky ground balls with lots of backspin. A glove will also protect the hand from the sting that a sharply hit softball can cause.

So what does a new player look for when in the market for a softball glove? Softball mitts come in a number of varieties depending on the position being played. A first baseman, for instance, will use a slightly elongated mitt that will help to field throws from the infielders.
